The strength of the immune system is changing over time. In particular, the adaptive immune system needs repeated exposures to microbes/pathogens in order to have full effect. Babies have not had such exposure, and hence their own immune system is not working effectively. Fortunately, the foetus gets immune substances directly from the mother during pregnancy, so that the child has a good concentration of antigens by birth.
Breast milk also contains antigens that will be transferred to the baby. Thus, the first few months after it is born, the baby has an usable passively (“borrowed”) immune system, which gradually is replaced by an in‐house system as the child’s body teaches itself how to adapt to the surroundings, something it is normally do well.
